10 Things to Know Before Going to NYC

I live an hour west of Toronto and being that it is only an hour flight to NYC and for someone who has a love for Broadway musicals, it is the one and only place I can think of when an opportunity for a quick getaway arises. Here are the 10 things I have always find doing before heading to the Big Apple after Covid-19.

Check passport expiration date. This is a given but I am just putting this out there while you still have time.

Check the weather. You might think that both Toronto and NYC have the same weather zone but wrong. I find that the weather in NYC is milder than that of Toronto. Dressing up in layers and in color coordinating clothes help me pack lightly because I can mix and match them and can dress up or dress down. I find that casual dressing is the norm unless you really want to stand out.

Bring cash with you. Credit cards are widely accepted in the city so this is a just in case kind of a situation for me because it is very inconvenient to find an ATM machine and withdraw from there. You never know how hacking can happen.

Know how you want to get to the city from the airport. There are so many options now how to get to NYC from the airport. In my recent trip this March 2022, I just found out that NYC taxi can be selected from a ride sharing app. How neat is that?

Cross the street without having to wait for walk signs. I have noticed in all these years of my trips there that really there is nothing wrong with not having to wait for a walk signs when crossing the street. Just make sure that there aren't any cars passing by and you are good to go. If you don't believe me, just wait for others to cross the street first and follow their lead.

Determine exactly what you want to see and do. There are so many things to see and do in NYC but the question becomes how are you going to get there? Are you willing to take the subway in these times? If this is your first time, I suggest taking hop on hop off for a day just to take in what the city has to offer and then focus on one area and book your accommodation from there.

Book a hotel that is close to your area of interest. Visiting NYC is all about walking so finding a hotel close-by where you would want to hang out is key. It is better to pay more in accommodation. After all, there are a number of cheap eats around the area. Check out my other blog about it too!

Bring your trusted and most comfortable shoes. If you plan on exploring and navigating the city, your shoes will become your bestfriend. The last thing you want to happen is you cannot walk in those shoes you brought with you and you have to buy and break in another one.

You can get your Broadway tickets the same day for a discounted price. If you just want to experience watching these shows, head out to TKTS booth and show up earlier before it opens. The line can get long rather quickly. This way, you can still end up with choices and get good seats too!

Be Aware of Your Surroundings. This city can be overwhelming at first because there's lots to see that can distract you. Make sure to look around you and see what the other are doing. Even to this day, I still find it fascinating to look around me and find how diverse this city is and the energy it brings.

Hope this helps your next visit to NYC. I was floored seeing the Big Apple once again. xoxo
